Walks are not the only way to help Schnauzers get their daily dose of exercise. Here are some other suggestions:

●Trips to the Dog Park – When Puggles was younger, we frequented our local dog park a lot. It was a great way to burn off energy, as well as gain that ever-important socialization. (She’s a little less patient with other dogs now that she’s 11.) An hour or so at the dog park, and she was ready to sleep when we got home, although she often needed a bath first.

●Games – Some Schnauzers like to play fetch with a ball of catch or a Frisbee, which is another great form of exercise. If I try this with Puggles, she just watches the ball roll, then goes off and does something else. Fetch is definitely not a universal favorite with Schnauzers. It all depends on the dog. Chase can be a popular option with some Schnauzers.

●Dog Toys – Again, it’s going to depend on the dog, but toys can also be a good option for some Schnauzers. With the exception of an occasional rope or sock for tug-of-war, Puggles has no interest in balls, stuffed animals, or other dog toys—but a lot of Schnauzers do.

●Wrestling – Besides walks, this is Puggles’ favorite form of exercise, and it’s something she learned early on from her friend Jack the Yorkie at the dog park. Before we got my cat, Boo, my husband was Puggles’ wrestling buddy. He got down on all fours and gently “attacked” her head and body with his hand, as she jumped and gave “love bites” back, sometimes flipping over while Mike gently pushed her around. Now, she and Boo do this several times a day. (Boo keeps our Schnauzer young.)

●“Hunting” – Finally, if you have a fenced yard, another way to encourage a little extra exercise is to hang bird and squirrel feeders to attract wildlife. Remember, Miniature Schnauzers were designed to hunt these critters, and there’s often nothing more exciting for them than a chance to chase. Just be mentally prepared for the fact that they may catch and kill small animals at times.
