The XJ-S interior was all new and totally devoid of wood but was very well equipped as standard.
A 2+2. Rear seating looked comfortable but was cramped in headroom and legroom for adults.
The unusual and unliked instrumentation for the XJ-S featured bar gauges, which were apparently more accurate than conventional analog, but did not project quality.
Jaguarâs early promotion of the XJ-S clearly identified the market the company was aiming for with the new car.
The XJ-S was only ever destined to take Jaguarâs V-12 engine and in most aspects all the mechanicals came from the saloons. The engine fitted was the latest version of the fuel injected V-12, but tougher emissions equipment for the US market cut brake horsepower there by about 40. The engine was mated either to a BorgWarner Model 12 automatic transmission or the previous E-Typeâs four-speed all synchromesh manual gearbox, modified for extra torque. At the rear, a Salisbury Powr-Lok differential with a 3.07 ratio was used.
Toward the ground, spring rates were changed, as the XJ-S was around 2 hundredweight lighter than the equivalent saloon, and there was a unique rear anti-roll bar. The braking system was pure XJ12. Tires were new Dunlop Formula 70 SP Super Sports on 6-inch wide GKN Kent alloy wheels.
Launched in September 1975, the XJ-S was one of the most expensive Jaguar/Daimler models one could buy at £8,900, but significantly cheaper than the equivalent Mercedes.
