Finding Your Inner Music

“Music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic things to the heart.”

– Pablo Casals

Now it’s time to play, have a little fun. You might find these exercises a bit intimidating, especially if it’s been a while since you permitted yourself to sing, to enjoy the vibrations of your voice.

Singing is our birthright and a means of communication that dates back to our first utterances, both as infants and the ancient beginnings of the human race.

It is rare to meet someone who doesn’t harbor a secret desire to be able to sing. I believe this desire is born within us as social beings. We all know the beauty of emotions music brings us, and we naturally want to connect with others in this way.

As discussed previously, pianos and singing were once the centerpiece of household entertainment, until the radio and phonograph turned music into a passive event to be done by professionals.

Great athletes like Tiger Woods did not stop people from enjoying golf; he brought more people to the game. However, singing feels very personal, and there is unnecessary embarrassment or even shame if we don’t sing at the level of a skilled professional.

I want to change this attitude for you. If you wish to be a great communicator, reconnect with the music inside you.

I ask my clients to play a game I call “the world’s worst musical.” This is an exercise in being wholly free and silly.

Find an area where you feel safe, where others cannot hear you. Take a section of a talk or points of an upcoming meeting and sing what you will say. And I mean, sing the words as silly as you like!

Don’t feel the need to sound good; that will likely bring self-judgment and intimidation. Allow yourself to sound “bad.”

Try singing the words with different approaches. Make the song a fast up-tempo high-energy number, then try a mellow ballad. Do corny, over-the-top musical theater, anything that makes you stretch and play with your voice.

Then, move from singing to speaking and then back to singing again. Do this in one constant motion. As you move to “speaking,” I want you to keep an attitude of singing throughout. Find the music in your speaking voice.

Move back and forth in this way until you can feel the music pulsing in your speech.

The next element will unite your musical devices in a natural and impactful flow. We will learn the power of emotional intentions.
