FIGURE 7.1: GET RID OF THOSE OLD GLASSES THAT DISTORT THE WORLD
ACCEPT WHAT IS
Having negative, preconceived ideas about yourself or about someone else is a bit like looking at the world through a constrictive mask or wearing glasses of the wrong prescription. You won’t see clearly what is really going on (see Figure 7.1). The more you can be mindful, accepting of what is in this moment right now, the easier it will be to understand and heal your patient.
REFLECTIVE EXAMPLE
A mother brought her four-year-old son to see me. She was well-dressed, drove a big car, her husband was a religious leader, and they had four children. Mother and son came to the consultation. When they arrived the boy (my patient) refused to enter the consulting room. His mother roughly pushed him in, and once he was in he went to the toys, with his back to us. There was no other contact between them. I explained to him about the case-taking, but he ignored me, and the mother just smiled, so I directed the case-taking to her.
Her manner was calm, her smile was bland and rather emotionless, and her voice level. She told me a lot of unpleasant things about her son, his rude and stubborn behaviour, his poor toileting, his lack of learning, and so on. I felt uncomfortable that the son was hearing all of this.
He continued to play, and did not react to anything she said. Finally, I felt I wanted to include him some more, and asked him directly about his food desires. He turned to me and made several rude and unpleasant noises and gestures, and then returned to his toys. His mother took no notice, and smiled at me blandly again, while answering the question herself.
