A fire department ambulance showed up a short time later, along with the Sheriffâs Department cruiser, and a couple of EMTs checked out Buck Williamsâ head injury.
âThat cut on your head isnât too bad, Mr. Williams,â one of them told him. âBut we need to take you to the hospital anyway. Any time youâve been hit in the head like that, you need to be checked out more thoroughly than we can do here.â
âFine, but not yet,â Williams responded firmly. He had gotten his senses back after the wallop and now seemed to be more angry than injured, as far as Phyllis could tell. âNot until we figure out the polecat whoâs responsible for what happened.â
As he regained his composure while sitting on the ranch houseâs front porch and waiting for help to arrive, it hadnât taken long for him to ask about the golden egg with the money in it. Heâd been furious when Phyllis told him it was gone.
That was when the ambulance and the sheriffâs cruiser pulled up with their lights flashing, and while the EMTs were tending to Williams, Phyllisâs son Mike took her aside and said, âAll right, Mom, tell me what happened here.â
âFirst of all, you need to make sure no one leaves. I canât be certain no one slipped off between the time I called you and when you got here. I might have missed it if they did. I didnât see anyone leaving, though. And the thief could have taken off before we realized that had happened, but I doubt that. It was all pretty quick.â
âYouâre saying that whoever attacked Mr. Williams is probably still here.â
âI think so, yes.â
Mike spoke into the radio attached to his collar and got back a quick response that a unit would block the driveway leading from the ranch headquarters to the farm-to-market road half a mile away.
Once that was done, Phyllis filled him in on the afternoonâs events and then led him to the tent where the attack had taken place.
Sam was standing at the tentâs rear corner with his arms folded. âIâve been guardinâ the scene,â he told Mike. âNobodyâs messed with anything. The groundâs just like it was, and that prize basketâs over there in the bushes where Phyllis found it.â
Mike took gloves from his pocket and started to pull them on so he could gather the evidence.
âYouâre not callinâ out the crime scene fellas?â Sam asked.
âAssault and theft are serious crimes,â Mike said, âbut they wouldnât be considered major cases and the department has limited resources. Weâve all been trained to collect evidence and photograph and document a crime scene.â
âWhat happened is a major crime to Buck Williams,â Phyllis pointed out.
âAnd weâll get to the bottom of it,â Mike promised.
He took pictures of the inside of the tent, the area behind it, and the prize basket that had been shoved up among the bushes.
âThatâs the famous coconut bunny butt your mom made,â Sam pointed out.
âItâs not famous,â Phyllis said.
âWith a name like that, it will be as soon as this story hits the news.
