Three days later
My mind was on my work, even if my heart wasnât in it.
I couldnât help but think that Iâd lost the opportunity to find the mystery girl at the coffee shop forever. There were so many questions still rattling around in my mind and keeping me up at night. The prudent thing to do would be to let them go. My job was too important to me to lose over a girl I barely knew. Iâd already taken risks I normally wouldnât have taken.
So far, Iâd come out of it unscathed. Even ahead of the game. While the FBI had taken over the case of the Jane Doe, I still got credit with the Lieutenant for solving the case for them. Heâd been nicer to me over the last couple of days because of it.
As for Anna, my options were limited. Every idea I came up with was dismissed out of hand. It wasnât a good idea and not in my best interest to pursue an investigation. I had information that I could follow up on, but it could potentially cost me my badge if I went down that road. I had to weigh the risk/benefit of the whole situation.
Was I going off the rails? Unhealthily obsessed? I wasnât even sure anymore. As much as I wanted answers, I was hesitant to go too far off the deep end again.
One thought tempted me. I could stake out Annaâs house again. But how would I explain it if someone complained? Most people werenât that observant, but it only took one nosy neighbor looking out a window, seeing my car, and then calling 911. Someone who had nothing else to do but gossip and cause trouble. Many a stakeout had been ruined by a neighbor phoning in a suspicious vehicle in the neighborhood. Cover blown when the blue lights appeared on the scene.
Thatâs why I nixed the stakeout idea. My best option was to run into her at Hipsters, the coffeeshop where we first met. I went there every morning and hung out longer than usual. Looked twice every time a jet-black-haired woman walked into or by the coffeeshop. The Anna lookalike never showed. Honestly, I didn't expect to see her, and I didnât. I never asked Katy, my regular bistro server about her either.
The FBI also took over the case of the three Strikers in the hospital. So, I also had no reason to investigate that assault or the mystery of the blonde woman who beat them up. They didnât even ask for the notes from my investigation.
Did I want to keep looking into it? Absolutely. But if I kept diving deeper, and it flew onto someoneâs radar, I could find myself in hot water I couldnât get out of. Especially if that radar belonged to the FBI and they complained to the Lieutenant.
Probably best to leave things alone. That happened in cases as well. After looking at every angle, sometimes the best thing to do was close the murder book, put it on the shelf, and wait for a break.
