Gloria - Gaia

What happens once the Pans’ children are healed on the mountain? We’re not warriors. What can we use to do battle? A few rocks and spears? No, the Pans choose to remain passive. And Jas and I still don’t know how to use our skills.

What are our chances of coming out of this alive so we can go home?

I TELL NALA I saw more trees in the forest writhe and share with her the vision I had when Jas fell behind.

She listens with ears perked and without saying anything until I’m done.

“In the hollow where the ground dipped, Shamanita appeared to me. She wore a flower wreath around her head, similar to the one you gave me, and a light-brown, linen gown. When she took one of my hands, we rose above the mountain peak where Altair shone so brightly, I found it hard to see. We looked at the valley, and she told me what to expect.

‘A new enemy has arisen,’ Shamanita said. ‘Three foes—the eagle, the Typho and a revived warrior tribe—will converge here where the two rivers meet.’ She waved her arm around the valley.

Her vision sent shivers through me, but her musical voice and peaceful tone calmed me.

‘Listen to the water. In it you’ll hear what you need to do. Use the resources provided. Tell Jas to follow the directions exactly as they’re given to you.’ Then we floated back down to the ground and she disappeared into the trees.”

I twist the bracelet Dad gave me until the jute pinches my wrist.

“You are a true Revealer. You won’t mess up,” Nala says as if she can sense my self-doubt. “Shamanita found a secret wildflower magic that gives her the gift of seeing the near future. Though we already have a Revealer in our tribe, our Protector is too proud to listen to her because she’s a child.” Nala nudges my arm with her snout.

“You and Jas have learned to work together. This is what you must continue to do.” Nala pulls her lips over her teeth in a goat smile. “Our enemies can’t defeat us if we all stand together.” She clomps on ahead with the other Pans, a habit they all share—drop an insight and clomp ahead while we process what was said.

Flower petals drop from the tree branches and I reach out to catch them like Jas did when he was delirious. Shamanita, who Jas dreamed about when he had the fever, and who I envisioned, is as real as the wind.

Jas comes up beside me. “You’re quiet. Are you mad at me?” He nudges me.

“Just listening and keeping watch.”

“Warn me if you hear harp music.” Jas smirks and I smile back. He still weak but seems more himself. Empowered. But I decide to wait until he’s healed to share my vision. “Nala said our enemies can’t defeat us if we all stand together.”

“Let’s hope we have the energy to climb this mountain and we get healed so we can find out.”

The climb pulls at my calf and thigh muscles and our breathing becomes labored.
