“Holly isn't funny,” I mutter, shifting restlessly on the air mattress. I pull the covers higher, tucking them under my chin in a futile attempt to find some comfort. But it’s pointless—my body won’t relax. Maybe it’s not just the lumpy mattress. Maybe it’s because Zoe is right there, only a breath away, nestled in bed.

“She’s kind of funny,” Zoe chuckles, and I roll my eyes, even though she can’t see me.

Out of nowhere, something soft and fabric-y smacks me in the face. I blink, startled, trying to shove it away. Pajama pants, maybe? It’s too dark to tell.

“What—Zoe?” I prop myself up, peering into the shadows.

There’s a beat of silence, then a sheepish, “Did I hit you with my pants?”

“Uh, yeah. You did.”

“Sorry. I ate too much.”

I flop back down onto the mattress with a sigh. “Fine.” Look, I get it, but part of me wishes she would put them back on. The thought of her being pant-less hurts my brain more than I’d like to admit.

A moment passes before she says, “You know, I think we’re pretty good at this fake dating thing.”

I bury my face in the pillow. “You think?”

“Yeah.” She yawns. “We should do it every Christmas. Actually, do you have plans for New Year’s Eve? Valentine’s Day? Easter? What’s your going rate? Do you charge extra if I want you to touch my—”

A laugh bursts out from my throat. She’s so casual with the innuendo, and I can’t deny that I enjoy being a participant.

“Good night, Zoe,” I say, my grin hidden in the darkness. Her quiet giggle is the last sound as we both settle into the pretense of sleep.

Maybe I didn’t wish for Christmas every day, but once in a while like this might be okay.
