Chapter Ten

Rowanda was feeling angry. The words Boultori spoke about selling her to the nomads as a slave, replayed in her head. As she trudged along through the endless sand, shifting and tugging at her every step, Rowanda shot daggers at Boultori's back. 'The evil little weasel... I will watch my back as long as he is with us.' Rowanda thought to herself. 'I wonder if I can truly trust Beir either?' Doubts crept into Rowanda's head.

'What do I really know of the two men with whom I am traveling? True, Beir saved my life on more than one occasion, or maybe it was I who saved his life. How is it that Beir happened to be at the exact spot when I entered this world in the first place? Are they really taking me to the king of this horrible planet to sell me as a slave?' The dreaded heat and her tired mind would not let her think of any good scenario. Rowanda was tired, thirsty and hungry. All she wanted to do was find her mother and go home.

"Little Dragon, we are almost to a place where we can stop and rest. I will make you something good to eat," Boultori said in a cheerful voice.

Rowanda did not answer. She kept one foot in front of the other and concentrated on the next step. She was not in a mood to talk to the wretched little man.

"I fear the Little Dragon is mad at me, Beirimor. What do you suggest that I do to get in her good graces once again?" Boultori asked Beir in a good-natured way.

"Just leave her alone, Boultori. If she is mad at you, she probably has a good reason. I suspect she was not thrilled with your suggestion to sell her to the nomads as a slave. Can't say as I blame her for being mad at you. You can be the south end of a drometarius heading north at times," Beir remarked to Boultori.

"There is no way the Little Dragon could think I would really have sacrificed her to save my unworthy skin?" Boultori said in mock reproach.

"Humph!" was the only response heard from Beir.

"I know how I can make amends. I will find our little princess some eggs to eat for breakfast. She will forgive me when I serve them on a gold plate with a desert flower as an embellishment," Boultori said as he merrily danced around.

Rowanda wondered how the little man could have energy enough to prance around in the sand when it was taking every ounce of strength to walk one more step. Barely glancing his way, Rowanda grumbled under her breath, "It will take more than an egg to make me forgive you."

"I think I heard the Little Dragon speak. She likes the idea of eggs for breakfast. Your wish is my command." Boultori bowed low to Rowanda and scurried off, keeping to the shadows of the dunes, without a backward glance.

Beir slowed his step. "We could stop and rest for a few minutes.
