Alex Jackson was enjoying her secondment down south in The Smoke. She felt she had seen more action in the last few days than she had done in the past year in Galashiels.

She entered her office and put her briefcase on the floor just in time to answer the phone. It was Control looking for DI Black. They had an important call for him.

‘I’ll take it,’ she said. ‘Inspector Jackson, can I help?’

‘Hello, this is Dave at the Hop Poles in Brighton. It’s about your missing man, George Evans. I assume that he’s still missing?’

‘Why do you ask?’ Alex said.

‘Because I’ve just read something on the internet that says the police are looking for him. The thing is, he left here a few days ago saying that he wanted to get back to his wife, so I don’t understand why he should still be missing.’

‘You’d better tell me more,’ Alex said, pulling across a pad and grabbing a pen.

Dave told her about George’s generosity to the other patrons of the pub. He said he thought George might be an eccentric millionaire who had lost his marbles until he had read the online article.

‘When did you last see Mr Evans?’

‘Saturday. There’s something else. When he left here, I think he was being followed by two men.’

‘Are you sure?’

‘It was a lunchtime session – people don’t normally knock back pints during the day, but these two did. Then they made a rush for the door straight after George left. I wondered what was happening, so I looked outside and saw that they had slowed down right behind him. They definitely looked like they were following George.’

‘Can you tell me anything about the two men?’

Dave gave a rough description.

‘Anything else?’

‘No, not really.’ Dave thought for a moment. ‘They’d been in a couple of times before and I remember one of them asking how business was and telling me he had some interest in a pub in London. I think he mentioned it was near a railway station like Victoria, or somewhere like that.’

‘Doesn’t the train from Brighton end up at Victoria?’ Alex asked, making notes on a desk pad.

‘Yes, it does, and George definitely said that he was catching a train.’

Alex pressed Dave for as much detail as he could remember, but there was little more he could offer apart from a vague recollection of what George was wearing.

‘Thanks again, Dave. I’ll get someone to come and see you and take a formal statement.’

In the meantime, Harry had driven down to Horsham in Sussex. He had received a phone call from the nursing home saying that his mother was asking for him.

He didn’t hesitate. His mother had never asked for him before, and so he had sped off towards West Sussex.

The sister was waiting for him by the front doors when he arrived.

‘How is she?’ he asked.

‘Would you mind stepping into the office where we can talk?’

Harry, who was already concerned, became anxious. ‘What is it, Sister?’

‘I’ve tried to contact you – have you been in hospital or something?’ The sister asked, staring up at Harry’s bandages.
