I manage to save the last curried chickpea pie and take it up to my tower. I add a drawing of a pair of dogpants to the THINGS THAT MAKE NO SENSE wall, and then, because I’m holding a pie, I add the Aunts’ three metal pie-warmers. The broken one has its door slightly open. Something about it sparks something in my mind, but my eyes keep coming back to the drawing of fireworks I stuck up there when this all started.

Jinni. My best friend, who called us all sweetie every day, until a week ago. Who this week said I hate you and wants to cheat at the LIZARD Competition.

Who tonight said please, and let me fix it.

Why would Jinni say she needs to fix the principal’s laptop if all she did was copy the LIZARD Program from it onto her ladybug? The cheating version of the program, that gives her the best mark in the country plus one, is on her ladybug – but we stopped her copying it onto the laptop, so what does she need to fix?

Unless …

If this ladybug copies a virus onto my computer, Mina said.

Unless something has already been copied onto the principal’s laptop.

You’ve got it all wrong, Jinni said.

Unless, when I caught Jinni coming out of the principal’s office, she wasn’t copying from the principal’s laptop, but to it.

Let me fix it, Jinni said.

Unless she was copying her cheating LIZARD Program from her ladybug onto that ancient, clunky laptop.

Ladybugs are poisonous to lizards, Quick said.

Unless Jinni has already poisoned the LIZARD.

And she wants to fix it.

And we keep stopping her.

Oh, dogpants.
