Luke circled, trying to get an angle on Joseph as the vamp launched lightning fast strikes at toward Luke’s body. The vampire’s aim wasn’t great after drinking Luke’s toxic blood and getting his nose broken, so Luke dodged out of the way, fearful of getting the gladius’s blade stuck in the wooden table leg. Seeing an opening, he darted in with a stab to Joseph’s torso. His arm, not fully recovered from the manacles, dipped, missing the fatal heart strike. Still feeling sluggish from the drugs and sore from hanging on the wall, he needed to end this quickly or find a way to survive until his body could recover.

“Fug!” Joseph cried and staggered back, the broken nose distorting his diction.

Luke pressed his advantage. Kicking out with his left foot, he knocked the makeshift club aside and spun around, beheading Joseph with a backhanded slash. Luke backed away from the fallen body of Joseph, putting the wall to his back. He longed to stick his rudis into the fallen vampire to ensure he was truly dead, but he didn’t know where it had landed.

“No!” Guillaume cried, taking a step away from his turntables.

The Mistress snapped her fingers and pointed back to the DJ table. Guillaume, anger seething from his eyes, returned to his records.

“Guillaume, pick up the tempo,” The Mistress said as she pulled a rapier with an ornate half basket hilt guard from behind her throne. She’d shrugged off her fur shawl and removed her shoes, setting them neatly beside the ornate seat. Guillaume picked up the beat; flashing lights and an occasional strobe lit up the room, which had gotten darker as the DJ sped up the tempo.

Luke looked around for his rudis and spotted it in the back corner of the dungeon. Before he could make his move, The Mistress took several swift steps to place herself between him and the rudis. He turned to face The Mistress, his foot catching on a scrap of cloth. He bent over and picked up his ruined T-shirt and wrapped it around his left hand several times. It was better than bare skin. As long as he didn’t grip her sword or block it outright, he could deflect it and prevent some damage to his hand.

The Mistress approached him, her sword weaving in front of her. By the look of her technique, she was well-versed in its use. Luke entered an en garde stance, left hand and shoulder turned toward The Mistress. She thrust her rapier forward, fast as a striking viper. He deflected it with his cloth-covered hand and returned his own thrust. She stepped back calmly, parrying with ease before slashing low. It hit. The left side of his abdomen burned, and blood seeped from the shallow cut. The Mistress was quick, even for a vampire, and highly skilled with her blade.

The rapier’s length gave her nearly twice the reach of Luke’s gladius, forty inches to his twenty, and neutralized his height advantage. Taking advantage of drawing first blood, she darted in to slash or thrust, then danced out of reach of any easy counter attacks.
