“I'm sorry,” Kimball sighed. “I don't know what else you want me to say.”
Her half ass apology only upset Dionne even more. She doubted Kimball even knew why she needed to apologize. Dionne sighed, “Are you really this fucked up human being and I was just too stupid to realize before now?”
“No! You know that I'm not that type of person,” Kimball told her. “I made some mistakes in the past. I can admit that, but all that stuff happened so long ago. I'm not that person anymore.”
“I really want to believe you, but...”
“But, what?” Kimball snapped. “I've been good to you. Who gives a fuck about what everybody else is saying? Kennedy. And Nae. And fucking Zia orchestrated this whole thing just so she could put it in her little show. You think this is all a coincidence?”
Dionne shrugged. She wasn't sure what to believe. She liked Zia, but didn't trust her. She didn't like the way Zia looked at Kimball.
“She knew before she even asked you and me that Nae would be on the show. And she knew that would cause a problem with us. That's what she wants. And that's the reason I didn't want to do this shit in the first place. The more people who know about your good thing, the more people there are to cause trouble.” Kimball continued, “I know you always want to see the good in people, but Zia is a manipulator. I see that from a mile away. All these suggestions and questions and shit. It ain't right!”
Had Zia asked all those questions at lunch just to get some inside information about Kimball? Dionne wasn't sure, but what Kimball said made sense. Like she said, Dionne always wanted to see the good in people, which meant, more times than not, ignoring the bad. That made her a target for people, who wanted to take advantage.
No matter what Zia said, Dionne believed she liked women or was at least curious. Maybe, this is all a game to get close to Kimball.
“Zia knows as long as we're together that I'm going to take care of you. So, she's trying to split us up. Divide and conquer.”
Dionne nodded. She wanted to believe Kimball was a good person and a good girlfriend. Maybe I'm tripping, Dionne thought, looking at what she believed to be sincerity in Kimball's eyes.
Still, she had her suspicions and they would not die so easily. Dionne asked, “What about everything else, Kimball? All the secrecy between the two of us. That's not Zia. That's you. You don't realize how much it hurts me when you keep things from me.”
“I keep things from you because I don't want to stress you out. I'd rather carry the burden myself sometimes,” Kimball said, hoping that would be enough to keep Dionne from asking more questions.
If she were anyone else Kimball wouldn't have bothered trying to explain herself. She liked Dionne, though. If only she would get with the program. Kimball wished Dionne would realize with the good came the bad.
