The next morning at breakfast, Dad told Mom all about how I’d cracked the case for him. Mom listened thoughtfully and when Dad finished his report, smiled.

“Well done, Cinnamon. I’m very proud of you and I’m sure Dad is as well.”

I swallowed a mouthful of protein-rich, calcium-enhanced syntho-juice, wiped my mouth on a recycled napkin and said, “Thanks, Mom. Dad, did they catch the dragon yet?”

“No, but we found its hoard by sending the cleaning robot through the ducts and caught a glimpse of the red devil. Mr. Trigger has arranged a nice display of glittering jewelry to tempt it into an enclosure. All the merchants donated their shiniest pieces to the trap—Mr. Trigger assured them that nothing would be damaged—and they’ve removed anything else that might interest a dragon from their shelves for the day. We expect to have the perp in custody by evening.”

I giggled. “I don’t envy the kid who ends up with that creature for a pet.”

Dad raised an eyebrow. “Truly? Mr. Trigger said he’d be delighted to place the unexpected dragon in your custody,” he said, “as long as you promise to take good care of it and teach it not to steal.”

My eyes widened and I stared at Dad, then Mom, then back to Dad. “Really? You’d let me have a Fornaxian dragon?”

Mom smiled. “I think you’ve proven yourself responsible enough for a pet.”

“You don’t have to accept,” Dad said. “But if you want this little red devil, it’s yours.”

I thought of the other two dragons, the gleaming scales of the emerald one and the surly glare of the black one. What would the red one be like? Obviously intelligent. Definitely exotic. Just the kind of pet I’d always dreamed of.

No solid, stable, normal pet for me. No sir. Cinnamon Chou, space station detective, needed a pet with spunk and imagination. Now I just needed to find a suitably adventurous name for dragon who was about to become a reformed thief!
