Chapter 5

Bathtub Surprise

The screams were coming from the convent. They got louder. Out the door ran Gabby in her bathrobe, with Tom and Toby in pursuit.

“HELP!” Gabby screamed as she ran around the back yard. A lacy shower cap covered her head. A bulky terry-cloth robe was tied around her tall figure. Large fluffy slippers flapped on the bottom of her big feet. In her hand, she waved a long-handled scrub brush in the air.

“HELP ME!” she screamed as she ran around the yard.

“Gobble…gobble!” called the two turkeys as they ran after her.

“Stop!” yelled Sister Krumbles.

Startled, Gabby halted. And when she stopped running, the turkeys stopped running and gathered around her feet to cuddle. But this did not soothe Gabby. She began to cry.

“Waaah….aaah….!” Gabby cried over and over. “I just wanted to take a nice bubble bath.”

All the Sisters came out of the convent and stared. Sister Krumbles looked from Gabby wailing, to the mess she had just made by dragging everything out of the shed, to her Sisters standing on the porch, to Mother Mercy standing in the doorway. She could not think of what to say.

“I’m sorry,” she gasped. “I thought the turkeys would be safe in the bathtub while I built them a pen.”

“The bathtub!” Gabby shrieked. “I just wanted to relax and take bath and then…”

“I am so sorry, Gabby!” cried Sister Krumbles. “Please forgive me!” She tried to hug Gabby. But the turkeys nibbled on Gabby’s bathrobe, and she screamed again.

“Waaah!” cried Gabby. “What do I have to do to have a nice bubble bath here?”

Mother Mercy’s face was very red. At first she looked angry, but then slowly she began smile. “I am sorry, Gabby,” she started to say, and then she began to laugh. “You need to be careful about making plans around this place!”

And everyone began to laugh. Mother Mercy went up to Sister Krumbles and hugged her.

“I am sorry I yelled at you and Wanda,” she said. “I was just surprised to find turkeys in the back yard. I guess I do not handle some surprises very well!”

“I forgive you!” said Sister Krumbles.

“I suppose you had a good reason to put two turkeys in the bathtub. You can tell us all about it at dinner. But tell me, Sister Krumbles, what are you going to do with the mess on the lawn?”

Sister Krumbles looked at the mountain of mess. And she really did not know what she was going to do about it.

“I don’t know. I was so busy making a turkey pen I didn’t think about it,” Sister Krumbles said.

Sister Shiny smiled, “Well, I love to clean up messes! The Sisters and I will help you!”

Sister Lacey put the gardening tools in the garage. Sister Lovely put the bins and boxes in the basement. Sister Shiny put the Christmas decorations in the attic. Mother Mercy helped Gabby back inside so she could enjoy her bubble bath. Sister Krumbles smiled as she put the turkeys in their new pen.
