CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Then

Dominic woke Charlotte with a kiss. Squinting against the light, she pulled herself up.

‘Happy anniversary,’ he said. ‘I’ve made breakfast.’

She could smell bacon and eggs. Dominic almost never cooked.

He’d put out a massive spread in the kitchen. It took Charlotte a moment to be sure it was real. Dominic beamed as he pulled out her seat. Charlotte went over the dates in her head. She’d forgotten completely.

‘Two years,’ Dominic said, pushing her seat in. ‘Would you have imagined that when we met in that club? Now look at us.’

Now look at them. Things had changed. Her life was unrecognisable. The big house they shared. The two clubs Charlotte worked across. The clothes, the events they went to together, the company they kept.

Dominic poured her a coffee. Charlotte watched him.

He hadn’t been this engaged in a long time. Dominic, nowadays, was more likely to be harried and under pressure, short-tempered and distant. When he’d asked her to take on the second club, she’d tried to tell him it would be too much, that she wanted to devote more time to writing. Dominic had given her a long, weary look, then said, ‘Well, I guess if you don’t think you can do it, there’s no point.’

She’d started the next day.

But this morning, not only had he remembered their anniversary – which Charlotte had forgotten – but was going out of his way to make a big deal of it. And in these moments, the moments where the Dominic she’d spent that first magical night with returned, it was like nothing had changed. Like every bit of fear and frustration was worth it. Like maybe, if they just pushed through the difficult times, they could find the good ones again.

She smiled back at him and dug in.

‘Today’s going to be full on,’ he said with an apologetic look. ‘And I can’t get out of the fundraiser tonight, but . . .’ He winked. ‘Well, let’s just say that might not be a bad thing. I’ve got a surprise for you.’

‘Oh?’

‘I promise you’ll love it.’

He finished his breakfast and left to get ready. Charlotte watched him go. She cleared the table, feeling lighter than she had in a while.
