Chapter 16

Fresh Water Mission

As a native of this planet, my tasks extend beyond the mundane scrubbing of the ship. Today, Captain Alder has assigned me to a crucial mission with a squad of four soldiers: to locate a fresh water source. The ship's water tanks sustained damage in the crash, gradually becoming contaminated with fuel. Our situation is dire.

Initially, my hands were cuffed behind my back, but the dense, untamed jungle quickly proved too challenging to navigate in such a state. The cuffs were removed, a pragmatic decision rather than a gesture of trust. Surrounded by heavily armed soldiers, my chances of overpowering them are nil. Yet, I harbor a different plan, one that doesn’t involve direct confrontation.

The jungle's vibrancy is a stark contrast to the lifeless wreckage we left behind. Above us, undale rats, with their bushy tails coiled, scurry through the branches. Soldier Anduit curiously inquires, “Think you can eat them?”

“I wouldn’t want to eat them,” Gale replies dismissively.

“But on my father’s planet, creatures like these, called Maccins, were a delicacy, sought after by the wealthy,” Anduit retorts.

Gale counters, “Only the rich eat halitin liver, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it's good. It's expensive, that's all.”

I remain silent, knowing well that undale rats, while edible, are far from a culinary delight. Typically, they are a last resort during the harsh winter months when other food sources are scarce.

My eyes shift from the treetops to the trunks, searching for a particular vine among the dense foliage. The trees are cloaked in a tapestry of green—ivy snaking along the bark, patches of soft moss, and colossal ferns that seem to consume half the tree. My focus is singular, honed in on identifying the vine that indicates the presence of fresh water nearby, a skill born from years of understanding and surviving in this lush, wild environment.

Navigating through this section of the jungle, marked by its ancient growth, feels surreal. The trees here are giants, dwarfing even the enormous spaceship in size. Above us, majestic vines laden with flowers stretch from one colossal tree to another, forming a natural tapestry of pink and green that drapes gracefully overhead. This should be a homecoming, a return to familiar tranquility. Instead, my thoughts are clouded by images of the scorched land near the spaceship, the splintered trees, and the Andorians' notorious efficiency in annihilating whole colonies and planets. The thought of them bringing such destruction to my home strengthens my resolve to prevent it at all costs.

I refocus on the task at hand, but it's the sound of flowing water that eventually guides us, not my search for the specific vine.

"That must be it," Til, the third soldier, remarks as we draw closer to the source of the sound.

The fourth soldier, a full-blooded Andorian whose name remains unknown to me, replies sarcastically, "No, that's just sand. Of course, it's the water we're looking for, you idiot." His golden eyes flick towards me with a cold glint. "Good thing we found it, or this one would have been dead before returning to the ship.
