CHAPTER 10 - THE SCARY PART

Standing in the middle of the screen doorway and anxious to get going, twelve year old Keith Meadows argued with his mother. Waiting for him was his best friend Tommy Nadir. “Mom, why do we have to take that geek with us?”

“Keith, don’t you call him that! Emil is a very nice young man. His foster parents are away and they asked us to look after him this weekend. I’m sure he’d love to camp out too, so you boys can include him.”

Emil was a stupid little dork, as far as Keith was concerned, and he didn’t give a rip where the dweeb's foster parents were. What he did know was that Mom didn’t have a clue what she was asking. “But it’s not fair to us!”

“Well, you have a choice. Emil can go camping with you or you can stay inside and entertain our new guest. What’ll it be?”

Keith and Tommy scuffed their feet along the concrete patio on the way to the expansive backyard where a large tent was set up.

“Your mom’s choices sucked.”

“Tell me about it.”

By the time the boys reached the tent, Keith’s mom had opened the backyard gate to let in Emil Lawder. Emil was twelve, pale faced with hollowed eyes, blonde hair plastered to his head, a kid with a lot of strikes against him. Tommy and Keith were less than enthusiastic.

“I can’t believe we gotta let that dork stay in our tent.”

Keith elbowed Tommy. “Don’t worry. We’ll scare the heck out of the little wiener and he’ll be begging my mom to let him stay in the house.”

Tommy grinned and smacked Keith on the shoulder. “Cool.”

Emil carried his camping gear in a plastic shopping bag and approached the two boys, more than a little nervous.

“Yo, s’up, Emil?” Keith teased. Emil shrugged, not understanding. Tommy and Keith rolled their eyes dramatically and climbed into the tent.

The two boys sat cross legged on their down filled sleeping bags, eating bags of Doritos Zesty, while Emil hunched down onto his collection of old blankets and pillow. Keith had a flashlight under his face, telling a scary story. “… and as the girl floated gently in her canoe on Crystal Lake, the sun shining brightly, then … JASON COMES SCREAMING UP OUT OF THE WATER AND PULLS HER OVER!!!”

Tommy has waited for this opportune moment to grab Emil and shake him. “RAARRGHHH!!!”

Emil stared quietly at Tommy, neither scared or angry. “I didn’t see that movie, but it sure sounds scary.”

Keith glared in frustration at Emil, not having achieved the desired results so they could have the tent to themselves. “It doesn’t SOUND scary, it IS scary. Don’t you know anything?” Keith held the flashlight up to Tommy, who shrugged, not having anymore stories to tell.

Emil held up his hand for permission to speak. “I know a scary story.”

Keith and Tommy shared a look, then Keith handed over the flashlight with a daring smirk.“ This I gotta hear.”

Emil took the flashlight and held it under his face, clearing his throat.
