CHAPTER 10
The Cancel Culture Playbook
Legendary boxing champion Mike Tyson famously said, âEverybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.â Itâs an apt description for the experience of being jabbed by a cancel culture mob looking to land a knockout punch. An increasing number of books about the phenomenon of cancel culture are hitting the shelves. That is a good thing. The more we talk about cancel culture, the better people will understand how it ruins lives and erodes the principles that have always been defining elements of America. The larger the conversation around cancel culture, the more rapidly we can move to end the practice for good, for the benefit of everyone.
In this book, we have sought to define for the first time the core elements that constitute what is and is not cancel culture. Our research and writing were based on prior analysis and efforts by respected authors, professors, intellectuals, and thinkers who have studied and defined political witch hunts and observed the shifts in American education and culture. We sincerely hope that we have succeeded in building upon their work and moving the conversation forward.
But there is an important distinction that should be made. Academics spend their days carefully considering issues from multiple perspectives, writing, analyzing, and teaching. However, the majority of our time is not spent writing books like this one, but in serving organizations and individuals in need of assistance with communications challenges. Our perspective is one formed through experience in navigating todayâs high-stakes, always-online world and finding ways to effectively communicate to a hyperconnected public in good times and bad.
While our trade deficit numbers may suggest otherwise, so much of what happens in the United States is eventually exported overseas. We are not talking about manufactured goods, but American culture, ideas, intellectual property, food, music, art, fashion, and so on, all of which inevitably end up far beyond our borders. Hopefully, that will not be so with cancel culture, which is fundamentally un-American. Cancel culture replaces the liberal democratic values shared by Left and Right alike with illiberalism.
While we hope that you never are forced to endure a cancel culture attack, hope is not a strategy. What will you do when the cancel vultures come for you? This chapter is meant to provide a playbook and help you answer that question. This chapter, especially, is intended to be a guide you can employ should you find yourself under fire. Before you get punched in the mouth you need a planâone that is strong and thoughtful enough to ensure that when flurries of punches come your way, you can rely on your training and preparation to stay on your feet and persevere.
Accept Reality: It Could Happen to You
No plan can anticipate every eventuality. Predicting the future is a dangerous game, and one that typically doesnât go very well. We have many limitations, and foretelling the future is certainly one of them. And yet, a careful consideration of your life, your business, and your
