Fundraising

Within a political party, money gets transferred between the national party and electoral districts. This allows the party to spend strategically as funds raised in safe ridings are redistributed to targeted seats. Tory fundraising in Calgary, for instance, was redirected to the lone Edmonton seat that the Conservatives did not hold. However, the news media did not report much about candidates seeking donations from supporters. There were occasional mentions of workers organizing fundraising events and selling tickets to listen to notable Parliamentarians giving a speech, such as the $20 fee to hear Conservative Senator Pamela Wallin in Moose Jaw, or $100 for a luncheon with former Ontario Premier Bill Davis in Guelph. A variation in Timmins–James Bay saw the Liberals bring in a comedian for a $100 fundraising dinner. Money was raised in other ridings by hosting barbecues, by hiring musicians, or by singing in a choir. A group of firearms owners, “Operation: Turf Mark Holland” (turfmholland.ca), apparently raised $10,000 to support Chris Alexander’s bid to defeat Liberal Public Safety critic Mark Holland in Ajax–Pickering. Such a lack of emphasis on money matters stands in sharp contrast to the importance of fundraising south of the border.
