Chapter Twenty-Six
When Michelle got Camâs message telling her to come to the park right away, she knew it was something awful. She could hear the panic in Camâs words, and now she too was panicking. They had literally just gotten to the first store when her phone beeped. Grinning when she saw the name Camryn pop up on her screen, she wasted no time in flicking the screen across and listened to what she thought was going to be a loving message saying how much she missed her. Instead, it had been a rambling plea to come right now.
She rushed out of the store, her parents encouraging her to go, that they would get a cab home.
âGet in the car now!â she screamed at Gavin, who didnât need to be told twice. He caught up with her, shouting instructions into a phone handset. They sped through the streets that led to Tongva Park while Michelle played the message she had just received. Gavin, serious most of the time, now looked deathly as they manoeuvred between traffic. The drive was a blur, and Michelleâs only thought was getting to Cam.
The journey wasnât that far, but it felt like hours until they pulled into the parking area. From there they could see police and paramedic vehicles surrounding a car next to Camâs, the blues and reds of flashing lights bouncing off the windows and paintwork of the other vehicles in the area. A small gathering of people was crowded around as close as they could get in order to see what the commotion was. Michelle scanned the area and studied every face, but she didnât see Camryn.
Jumping out of the car she ran towards Camâs vehicle, almost making it before a police officer grabbed a hold of her and stopped her in her tracks.
âMaâam, you canât go there,â the burly cop with gentle brown eyes said calmly to her, his arm still out, preventing her from moving any further forward.
âI have to. My fiancée called me and said I had to come now to get the kids, where are they? Where is Cam?â she cried as her eyes raked back and forth, still searching for any sign of Camryn.
âCamryn Thomas?â
âYes! Where is she?â Michelle said urgently, her movements stopping to look directly at him.
âMaâam, can you follow me please?â He led them around a series of vehicles until they were away from the scene. âMaâam, can you confirm your name for me please?â
âMichelle, Michelle Hamilton,â she replied. âWhat is happening?â
âMaâam, the children have been instructed not to open the car to anyone but âAunty Shell,â is that you?â Concern in his voice rattled her for a second. Why would the kids be locked in the car? Where the hell was Camryn?
âYes, yes itâs me! What is going on? I donât understand. Where is Camryn? I need to find Camryn.â
âMaâam, Ms Thomas was involved in an incident with an as-yet-unknown assailant. She has been wounded, and the paramedics are working on her as we speak,â he explained as gently as he could.
