Chapter 7

Faith picked up her fork automatically. Put the way Max had just put it, what possible decision could she make? She didn't want him to go, but if he didn't the pain would only be worse when, inevitably, he left her for good.

"I don't know," she said, swallowing a mouthful of pancake. "I'll think about it."

"Not for long, you won't," he said, with such conviction that she knew he wanted to say more.

"No. No, not for long. Give me the weekend." She stared into the cup of tea he had set in front of her, then said hesitantly, "Max, it's Saturday. We can't stay alone here all day..."

"Driving each other crazy?" He dropped a knife on to his plate with a clatter. "No, we can't. So what do you propose we do about it?"

"Well—we could go to the Hoh Rain Forest. It's a long drive."

"Which would keep me gainfully employed with my hands safely on the wheel and off you. Is that the idea?"

"Something like that," she admitted.

He laughed, an abrasive sort of laugh that made her wince. "All right. You're on. I'm expecting a phone call from my accountants in London sometime soon. We'll leave after that."

"Fine. And tomorrow I'm having lunch with my family," she added quickly.

"So am I."

"You are?" Faith looked up, startled and not best pleased. "You mean they know you're here?"

"Coming from a girl who was brought up in Caley Cove, that's a very odd question," he remarked.

Faith smiled for the first time that morning. "Yes, I guess it is. Mrs. Gruber again, I suppose."

"Probably. We had a chat on the stairway yesterday."

"Mrs. Gruber doesn't chat. She interrogates."

"Precisely."

Faith began to feel better. This wry, non-aggressive Max she could cope with. It was the sexy wolf who caused her all the problems. If only he would stay like this...

For most of the day, greatly to her relief, Max did just that. He took his call, which seemed to go on for some time, after which they climbed into the car and spent the drive to Hoh discussing the scenery and their respective families.

It turned out that Max and his younger brother had spent a very happy childhood growing up in Scotland. His parents had been devoted, both to each other and to their children. Max referred to them affectionately as the ideal couple.

And for him, of course, there had always been the lure of the mountains.

They stopped for lunch at an attractive lakeside hotel where their unusual amity continued. Faith had no difficulty now in understanding what it was that had drawn her to Max in the first place. He was a relaxed and considerate companion when he chose to be, and surprisingly urbane for one who had spent half his life in the wilds. Above all, and again only when he wanted to, Max knew how to make her laugh.

It was early afternoon by the time they arrived in the rain forest where the warm sun filtering through the trees touched the lush greenery around them with an ageless magic.
