Media content becomes most powerful when you place “tags” on it. As mentioned earlier, you would “tag” a photo with the names of those pictured, resulting in all the individual’s friends being notified that they’ve been “tagged.” Add a description that subtly mentions where the photo was taken (the studio) and the occasion, and you have woven a very soft marketing element into that Facebook post. This information alone should motivate you to take photos and videos of your students at events and post them on your Pages!

A third driver, mentioned several times earlier, is connecting to other social networking platforms. “Cross links” are incredibly powerful, not only because they allow greater networking among users of these different networks, but also because they create a more links on the internet. More links makes search engines think you’re more important. Luckily, most of the popular sites have tools, which make it simple to automatically create these cross links. For example, if you post a video on YouTube, you simply check a box on YouTube and the video will get posted to your Facebook Page simultaneously.

Finally, and most obvious, is the number of Likes you have. When someone “Likes” your business, anyone who visits their profile can see the name of that business. As with all marketing, it’s a numbers game. Just as only a percentage of people will respond to an ad, only a certain percentage of people will note that their Friend has Liked your business or care about a posting where someone mentioned your class or studio. Therefore, the more Likes you have, the more people you can potentially reach. The real key is managing all three elements—(1) posting great content with tags and descriptors, (2) using multiple mediums, and (3) growing your number of Likes as a result.

FACEBOOK MISTAKES

Aside from poor content, not using multiple media to create interest, being too overt with promotions and not connecting to other social media platforms, here are four other common mistakes that will reduce the success of your Facebook activity. Some are more technical in nature, but use this list to locate more information in internet marketing publications or in a Google search.

• Mistake #1: Not using tags when posting pictures and videos. We have mentioned this already, but it’s important to emphasize. A “tag” gives identifying words or names to pictures and video content you post. When you tag something posted on a Page, search engines will find and index that piece of content. Therefore, if you don’t correctly tag your photos and videos with names and/or key words, you’ll miss out on SEO opportunities.

• Mistake #2: Not posting regularly. For most small businesses this is by far the most difficult factor to monitor. You’ll be busy with the day-to-day of operating your business and, unless you have someone dedicated to handle your social media, it’s too easy for even weeks to pass without a new post. But search engines are mechanical and as such, they look for patterns.
