FIFTY-TWO
Green wasnât done. Not by a long shot. Whether or not Mason Blackâs lady friend was caught in the explosion was uncertain, but that didnât mean he had to stop and wonder. In fact, it gave him the extra little window to tick something off his checklist.
He had walked in easily enough, using nothing but a stick-on beard and a pair of glasses to breeze through the hospital. Nobody had given him so much as a second look, much less questioned him about the pizza bag hanging from his clenched fist.
âOh, this?â he imagined saying. âThis is just a pizza. Itâs a little hot. Might blow your head off. Here, why not take a slice and see what happens?â
After reaching the second floor, Green found FBI and police loitering outside Cunninghamâs room. Green began to sweat then. He headed into the bathroom, where he waited inside a cubicle until the room cleared. When all signs of visitors had vanished, he stood atop the toilet lid and pushed up a ceiling panel. There was apt room for his little delivery, and Green slid it in with no problems before getting the hell out of there.
Across the street, he found a bus shelter. Green stood there among the other people, blending in easily. He was a safe distance from the hospital, clutching the detonator in his pocket. Any farther away and he would be out of range. Besides, he longed to see the fireworks explode about the city. It was a win he was long overdue. Not to mention that Cunningham was in that building. It was like killing two birds with one bomb.
Green put his thumb at the ready. Around him, soon-to-be passengers waited to board their buses. They talked among themselves, some checking their watches and huffing. You wonât be bored for much longer, Green thought, amusing himself.
Then, without further delay, he triggered the blast.
There was a whistling sound that seemed to drag on. A bright flash of light flickered across the parking lot. Everyone turned their heads. The boom came next, echoing around them like a crack of thunder, and the hospital began to crumble. Rubble and smoke flew in a mishmash of dark debris. The building began to collapse on itself, the second, third, fourth floors all caving in as the foundations failed to support it.
Around him, people watched in stunned silence. Some held their hands to their mouths, covering shocked gasps. This was itâthis was exactly what Green had wanted. To make such a spectacle that the FBI couldnât cover it up. Now, everyone would know what he had done. And what was still left to be done in the coming days.
For this was only the beginning.
