Chapter 15

I Killed Them

“Brennan, keep up. We must be quick. We shouldn’t be out here.” Battling her way through the Moycullen Forest, Sister Alannah is in a hurry, “You really need to stay with me. We must be back no later than eight or the fact that we’ve left will be noticed and that isn’t good.”

True to her word that morning, Sister Alannah has taken Brennan out into the forest to try to find the lost recording device. With branches smacking her in the face, she’s desperately trying to scramble her way through and ensure that Brennan remains behind her.

“Well, if you slow down, I might be able to keep up. Believe it or not, Sister Alannah, the last thing I want is to be stuck out here on my own again.”

Frantic, as she doesn’t want to be back late, Sister Alannah says, “Here, hold my hand.”

Smiling, Brennan holds Sister Alannah’s hand. “Can I ask you a question?”

Dragging Brennan as they venture deeper into the forest she says, “Yes – but only if you keep walking.”

“You’ve just said that I was found way over there?”

“Yes.”

“But that’s nowhere near the gates.”

“What do you mean?”

“Earlier today, you said that both yourself and Sister Kathryn found me outside the gates. Well, like I said, that’s nowhere near the gates.”

Unsure how to answer the question, Sister Alannah remains quiet. The pair continue to head deeper into the trees.

“Sister Alannah, answer the question, why are we heading this way if I was found outside the gates?” Brennan pulls his hand out of Sister Alannah’s and stops, “I’m not moving another step until you answer my question.”

“Brennan – you don’t understand, I can’t.”

“What do you mean? You can’t what? Sister Alannah, tell me what’s going on.” Walking over to her, Brennan places his hand on her cheek as he says, “Do you trust me?”

Closing her eyes and embracing the touch of his skin upon her face, Sister Alannah whispers, “Yes.”

“I promise you can tell me anything.”

Opening her eyes, Sister Alannah gazes deeply at Brennan, “Why did you come here?”

“What do you mean?”

“It’s a very simple question – why did you come to the Moycullen Forest?”

“What has that got to do with what I’ve just asked you?”

“I just want to know.”

“Okay, but you’re the one that keeps saying we’re in a rush and that we must hurry back, I’m a little confused as to what importance that particular question has to do with this moment right now. Do you want to enlighten me somewhat?”

“It’s important and that’s all you need to know.”

Rolling his eyes and shaking his head, Brennan says, “Okay, if you think it’s important, then fine, I’ll answer you right now. It’s simple, I just like to hunt the supernatural. I’m what people call a—”

“Paranormal hunter. I might live in a secluded nunnery but I’m not stupid, Brennan. You wanted to treat us like some sort of freak show?”

“I never implied that at all. Now you’re just trying to put words in my mouth. Look, I’m just answering your question.
