Prisoners wait in a trench as others, with their escorts, cross it by the use of a trench bridge. Notice that none of the Germans have a steel helmet: they only became general issue well into the battle and in the first weeks they were handed over as ‘trench stores’. The great bulk of the early production of the first stahlhelm went to the Verdun front.

The Germans had held the same positions, with very little exception, on the Somme front for almost two years and had not been slow to develop defensive systems, both physical and in reaction planning. They dug numerous dugouts, but the one illustrated, in Bernafay Wood and captured by the 9th (Scottish) Division on 3 July, is a particularly large and fine specimen.
