CHAPTER SEVEN
TOGETHER the three of them made their way towards the railway line, Ella running ahead. It was, in fact, much further away from their picnic spot than Max had indicated, with a couple of wide fields, small copses, and a brook with no more than a trickle of water in it to be negotiated. But at last they made it, and there were plenty of blackberry bushes in evidence.
Feeling hot, but exhilarated, Candida looked up at Max as they took stock of the situation. ‘You were right, Max—someone’s been here before us,’ she said. ‘But look at all those blackberries on the top stems—still plenty left for us if we can reach them.’
He grinned down at her, realising that he felt as energised as she looked—and also aware that their relationship seemed to have taken a more encouraging turn. It was true that she had resisted him earlier, but he had not been able to help himself—and he wasn’t sorry that he’d done it. It had been a simple matter of the desire of a full-blooded male for a tantalizingly beautiful woman, and she’d demonstrated a sensual side to her nature that had excited and invigorated him in an unexpected way. It had been something of a delightful surprise! And one which gave him some grounds for thinking that their…. association…might develop into something more satisfying to him.
He glanced up at the top bushes. ‘I think I can get most of those,’ he said, shielding his eyes against the lowering autumn sun. ‘Especially if we can find a longish stick to help grab them.’ He peered around him, treading the grass underfoot, and as if fate had arranged it a conveniently sized branch with a bit of a gnarled hook at the end presented itself. ‘Ah—this’ll do,’ he said, picking it up.
In the end there were still enough blackberries at the base of the bushes for Candida to nearly fill her plastic bag, while Max continued reaching up to pick the huge, luscious ones at the top, his powerful height barely needing the branch he’d found. He looked down at her as she crouched to pick the berries almost at ground level, and stopped what he was doing to stare at her for a second or two. Her hair floated luxuriously around her shoulders, reminding him of the advertisements he’d seen on TV for hair colourants. Except he knew instinctively that the rich darkness of Candida’s was purely what nature had endowed her with.
She sensed him looking at her, and as their eyes met he was rewarded by a certain something in her expression that told him most of what he wanted to know. She was as attracted to him as he was to her, and for the moment that had to be enough. But the best was yet to come, he reassured himself—if he could overcome whatever it was that seemed in the way. His brows knitted fleetingly…Somehow he didn’t feel that she was playing hard to get,
