I told him all the many details that he was keen to know. Then he made a confession. He had realised from the start the severity of my swelling, but had kept it a secret. To shorten my potentially dangerous stay in hospital and not have to wait for the operation, he had dressed the boil with ointments, making it ripe for cutting. I thanked him, but he was too busy to look up. With motherly care, he was removing the scurf from the infected scalp of a little Gypsy.
