Vicky had called in sick again, this time for the rest of the week. Kenna phoned her, but for the umpteenth time it rang off. Now she suspected Vicky was avoiding her. Perhaps because she wanted distance between them because of the threat hanging over Kenna. Kenna figured her best way forward was to give Vicky space, which would also keep her off Eli’s radar. They could reconnect when this was all over.

Kenna told her boss she had a dentist’s appointment at twelve, and he allowed her to leave an hour before. She called Ray as she was heading to her car, and was surprised to find he had not only skipped work early, but was already at the Tesco.

‘I thought I’d check it out, see who came and went. Nothing doing. I’m in a corner near a key cutting stall. I took a taxi so we can just use your car.’

On the way to work, she’d checked for a tail and spotted nothing. Now, driving away, she again scanned her environment and saw no dodgy vehicles. It did little to convince her she wasn’t being followed. She got to the Tesco with ten minutes to spare. She spotted the key cutting stall and headed over. Ray was sitting on a kerb bordering a grassy bank. He pointed to a free parking bay in the corner.

‘Do we go inside?’ she said when he got in the car.

‘They know your car. Let’s just wait right here. They can find us if they want us. We shouldn’t have to look around.’

She had backed into the bay so they could see the entire car park and the entrance to the store. People came and went. Because they were seeking the approach of motor vehicles, neither spotted the kid on the BMX until he knocked on her window. He was about eighteen, handsome except for a healing split lip. She looked at Ray, who told her to wind the window down an inch.

As soon as she did, the kid blurted out a street name and ‘Quick as you can,’ and then got moving. He hopped the kerb, rode up the bank, and disappeared out of sight.

‘Do we do it?’ Ray asked. In answer, Kenna started the engine. Ray got on his phone and had the street map ready by the time they’d reached the car park exit. ‘Baydon Road. It’s a residential street to the northeast, off the A308. Half a mile away.’

‘So we could be going to someone’s house. That’s okay.’

‘Well, it beats a disused warehouse, but I don’t trust these bastards. Let’s be careful.’

The homes along each side of Baydon Road were terraced and sans gardens, so residents had lined the kerbs with their cars. It thinned the road enough to guarantee two cars couldn’t pass without swapping paint. Kenna paused her car at the entrance.

‘Do we just drive down?’

‘Yeah, slow, so we can see what’s what.’

No cars were oncoming, so the way ahead was clear. As her vehicle passed house after house, they stared at each door, each window, each resident on the pavements.
