Seeing in perspective

A bearded man stands by a pillar, his back bare to the whips of two soldiers. A man in costly clothes watches the scene from his seat to the side; another observer stands. Outside the building, closer to the viewers, three more men converse. They seem oblivious to what is taking place behind them, though the way they are grouped seems to echo the soldiers and their victim, and the fantastic variety of their clothes echoes a similar variety in the main scene.

Despite the violence of the events, the scene has an unearthly calm to it. The light defines the figures, but it is hard to read: there is perhaps a lamp shining from somewhere the viewer cannot see. Order and chaos seem balanced in a way that is hard to grasp; and the two groups of figures must, surely, have something to do with one another: but what?
