“First of all, [phones] already do. But because of this, it creates a major violation of our privacy because the fact that someone could always know where I’m at frankly terrifies me.”
—Dillon, Battle High School, age 16
Here’s a bonus “what if”: what if your phone could predict where you go next? They don’t call them “smart” phones for nothing. The more data our computers (and your phone is really more computer than phone now) collect about us—what we search, what we buy, what we watch, where we go, etc.—the better they’re becoming at predicting what we’ll do next.
“Wait. How does my phone know where I’m going to be? It doesn’t have a brain.” We hear you. You’re right. Your phone doesn’t have a brain, but it has something like a brain. It’s able to collect data on you: what you like to do and when, where you go for different things, and with whom you hang out. Think about it. Every time you use your phone, you’re giving it a little bit of information about what kind of person you are. Via data mining, it can look through all of those pieces of information, find patterns, and then make predictions based on your patterns. For instance, after noticing you driving to school at around the same time every day or going out to your favorite place to eat every Friday, your phone might start prompting you with the amount of time it will take to get to school or letting you know that that restaurant is getting crowded (because your phone is talking to other phones, which know what their owners are doing!). It’s smart and a little frightening.
