Chapter eighteen

Saturday, October 29th, 8:37 a.m.

The morning dawned bright and early with a coolness in the air. Bethany Potter stepped out on her back stoop to watch Gigi, her Yorkie, run around the backyard to find the perfect place to relieve herself. Steaming cup of coffee in hand, Bethany tried to ignore the nagging feeling in the back of her mind.

Her husband hadn’t come home again last night, just like the night previous. He hadn’t even bothered to return her calls. He’d pulled this crap on her before, back a few years ago. Of course, he’d said he was working on his campaign and that “running for mayor was serious business.” She’d later find out that, yes, he was working on his campaign all right—his campaign manager, Kimberly Francis, that is.

Bethany pulled a face now as she thought back to her husband's indiscretions. A bark of laughter escaped her lips just thinking about it. Little Kimmy Francis (with her perky breasts, flat stomach, and bubbly personality) wasn’t the only woman who’d led her husband astray. Bethany wasn’t an idiot. She knew Corey would screw anything that looked his way.

She groaned, instantly in a foul mood. Where was he? The girls had their cheer competition at ten, but they needed to be there by nine thirty.

“I swear to God, he better not make us late again today,” she grumbled to herself. Corey, her husband of nearly fifteen years, was chronically late, if he even bothered to show up at all. Bethany truly could care less at this point in their marriage. She poured her energy into raising their three daughters, caring for their large home on the better side of town. Other than having a cheating husband, Bethany Potter lived a charmed life: PTO mom, successful work from home job that allowed her to be involved with her children’s lives, a large circle of friends, singing in the church choir every Sunday, and driving a brand-new Infiniti QX80 SUV.

Even now, as she watched her dog work on a bowel movement, she found that despite Corey’s infidelities, she was content. Yes, she wished he’d have the courtesy to call her or even come home at night. But, as long as he was kind to the girls, and provided for their family, she was content enough to turn a blind eye to his behaviors.

Gigi wiped her feet off in the dewy grass and then bounded up the steps to Bethany’s feet. The woman bent to scoop up the little dog and then headed into the house.

Bethany set the dog down and picked up her phone. Still no texts from Corey. With a sigh, she called his phone yet again, but it just rang through to voicemail. Sighing, she left a message for him to call her as soon as he could, and then hanging up, she called his office. It was nearly 9:00 a.m., but surely someone would be there. The city didn’t stop for the weekend which meant Corey didn’t either.

Her call rang through and then after a moment, a voice answered.
