The T-R-A-V-E-L Equation: Why Chinese Are Buying Luxury Abroad
There are many reasons Chinese consumers purchase luxury goods abroad rather than at home. Most observers believe they do so mostly because of the difference in price points. This is a valid argument but by far not the only one to consider when trying to understand why most Chinese consumption is now taking place abroad.
Time: On Luxury's Side
What do you lack all year round when you are trying to make a living and improve your social status? Time! Travel, whether for business or pleasure, gives you that time to reflect on the future and, why not, treat yourself to a gift.
Hermes Zhou, our well-off Chinese Canadian avatar based in Hong Kong, purchases most of his luxury goods abroad. This may sound odd, but the reason he does so is that, even though luxury stores surround him in Hong Kong, his hectic life in asset management leaves him little time to shop. He also finds he's in a much better mood for shopping when he goes off to his work's London headquarters. He's got time at the airport in and out but also, with his firm based in the West End, he finds it fun to stroll along Bond Street or Knightsbridge when he's got a break between meetings.
Most people are like Hermes, keener to spend during holidays or business trips, whether on a restaurant meal, a watch or a handbag.
