Chapter 13

The rain felt different now. Before, it was cold, miserable, a sign of my decay. Now, it felt like coolant on an overheating engine.

The lead Rust-Jackal raised his rifle, screaming something about a payday. My tactical vision painted a red trajectory line from his barrel to my chest.

[PROJECTILE TRAJECTORY: CALCULATED.] [EVASION WINDOW: 0.4 SECONDS.]

I didn't think about dodging. I just moved.

My body snapped to the left, a blur of motion fueled by desperation and code. The kinetic slug hissed past my ear, singing the air, shattering the brickwork behind me.

I closed the distance. Three steps.

The Jackal tried to adjust his aim, but he was moving in human time. I was moving in System time.

I stepped inside his guard. I smelled the stale tobacco on his breath, the ozone of his cybernetics. I didn't look at his eyes this time. I looked at the gap in his armor plating just above the clavicle.

[STRIKE POINT CONFIRMED.]

I drove the Vorpal Shiv down.

It wasn't a struggle. The obsidian bone sliced through the synthetic mesh and soft tissue without resistance. I felt the wet thud of the blade hitting something vital. I twisted the handle—a savage, instinctive motion—and ripped it free.

A fountain of arterial spray painted the front of my shirt.

The Jackal gurgled, dropping his rifle, clawing at his neck. He collapsed into the mud.

Then, the rush hit me.

[TARGET ELIMINATED.] [KARMA: -300 (SINNER)] [ENTROPY VENTED: 25%] [VP GAINED: 150]

It was instantaneous. The searing, acidic pain in my veins—the corruption from Elara’s holy magic—evaporated. It was replaced by a surge of cold, electric vitality. My vision sharpened to 8K clarity. My heart rate dropped from a panicked rabbit-kick to a slow, predatory thrum.

It felt... euphoric.

I threw my head back and gasped, the steam rising from my skin as the necrotic waste burned off. I wasn't just surviving the kill; I was getting high on it.

"He... he killed Jace!" one of the other Jackals screamed. The bravado in his voice shattered. "Open fire! Flatline him!"

Three of them left.

They opened up with kinetic rifles and plasma pistols. The air filled with the screech of energy bolts.

I didn't retreat. I sprinted forward, diving behind a slab of fallen concrete. The cover disintegrated under their fire, chunks of rock raining down on me.

Tactical Assessment: Target A: Reloading. Target B: Flanking left. Target C: Suppressive fire.

I looked at the layout of the ruins. A rusted fire escape hung loose above Target C.

I grabbed a fist-sized chunk of concrete and hurled it, not at the men, but at the rusted bolts holding the metal ladder in place.

Clang.

The bolt sheared. The fire escape groaned and swung down, a ton of swinging steel.

Target C looked up just in time to scream. The metal staircase slammed into him, driving him into the mud with a bone-shattering crunch.

[TARGET NEUTRALIZED.] [ENTROPY VENTED: 50%]

Two left.

They stopped firing. They realized the geometry of the fight had changed. They weren't hunting a civilian anymore.

"Where is he?" the flanking Jackal whispered, his voice trembling over the sound of the rain.
