A Nasty Shock

When the farmer woke up early next morning and went round the farm on his rounds he was to be in for a nasty shock, he wasn’t to realise that when he opened his eyes that morning however.

Because it had been a clear night, the sun rose early that morning and it was shining brightly into the room as the farmer opened his sleepy eyes; it was still very early and Mrs Brown lay fast asleep beside him. Knowing that she wouldn’t be working that morning, Mr Brown quietly got dressed and crept downstairs so as not to wake her.

This is where the farmer was to get his first surprise, for on hearing him, Bruce the new sheepdog started to bark loudly. That’s strange thought Mr Brown; he doesn’t usually do that.

After putting his boots on, he then opened the door and told Bruce to be quiet. “What’s the matter with you boy? Shush! I don’t want you waking Mrs Brown. Get in the truck,” he told Bruce firmly, being a little cross that he was making so much noise. Farmer Brown then opened the door of his vehicle and they went on their way round the farm. Mr Brown was anxious to see how his wheat and barley were doing out in the fields.

As the farmer drove along the lane having just started to drive away, he was still feeling a little sleepy and not fully alert to the things around him. He was more concerned about his cereal crops and so he failed to spot some of the tell-tale signs that were quite evident to many other farmers. Bruce was well aware that something was wrong though and as they passed by the gateway where the cattle rustlers had been, Bruce started barking and getting excited again.

“Shush, Bruce; quite boy. I don’t know what’s wrong with you this morning,” the farmer scalded him. Poor Bruce was only trying to be helpful but unfortunately the farmer failed to spot that anything was wrong and he just carried on his way towards his wheat and barley fields.

When he got to his precious wheat and barley crops, the farmer was more than happy with them. He was in a particularly good mood because they appeared to be doing so well. Realising that his few regular workers would soon be waiting for him up in the farmyard, the farmer then made his way back to the farm. As they passed the field where Annie and the others had been, Bruce started barking again.

“Whatever’s the matter with you boy?” the farmer asked him again. You don’t usually make so much noise do you? still the farmer didn’t spot that anything was wrong. By that time Mr Brown was starting to feel hungry and he was looking forward to a hearty breakfast. He was hoping that Mrs Brown might have got up and be in the kitchen making their breakfast.

Fortunately Mr Brown just had time to nip indoors before his workers arrived and so he went inside to see how Mrs Brown was getting on.
