Chapter Six

Kate

Maybe the sofa and some of the chairs in the lounge were fuchsia? I always mixed the two colors up. I was a singer, not a painter. In daylight, they might be fuchsia.

“Kate?”

“Hm?”

“Are you hungry?”

Sam had schooled his features again and I’m sure I appeared the same.

I shrugged. “Maybe? I usually don’t eat dinner this early, but it might be one of those times where you start to nibble and then get ravenous.”

He grinned at me.

“What?”

“I love things that pop out of your brain.”

My cheeks warmed. Blushing at thirty-eight! Geeze.

“There’s a restaurant here if you want to try it. Or, we could go out.”

“To what?”

“Uh, I don’t know,” he said with a chuckle. “I’m spitballing here. A movie?”

I shrugged. “Worst ideas.”

We stood. “Only if you’re not a popcorn-hogger.”

“Like I share popcorn.”

He grinned. “Touché.”

We turned toward the exit and I said, “You should grab a coat.”

He’d only come down in the sweater and jeans from lunch. “Can’t help yourself, can you?” We redirected toward the elevators.

My heels were noisy on the wood floor of the lobby. Sam pressed the button and the doors opened. We stepped inside and I kept distance between us as we rode up.

Once on his floor, I followed him to a room where he used a keycard.

To the left when entering the suite was the bathroom and a closet.

The décor was modern here, too. Dark blue carpeted floor with lines of color. Lots of gray elsewhere, except for the white comforter on the king bed. At the opposite end was a tall window with a clear view of the city. Next to the dresser opposite the bed was a desk.

His laptop sat open but the screen was dark.

“Posh, Cord.”

“Yeah, yeah.” He grabbed his coat from the back of a chair. “Short notice, yada yada.” Patted the pockets for his keys. “Not as expensive as you think. I shop for deals.”

“I’m teasing. Touchy about money?”

A shake of his head. “Old habit. Sorry.”

“Explain.”

“Mandy.”

“Ah.”

He opened the door for me. “While she can blow money like there’s no tomorrow, there was always a comment on my spending.”

“Pretty sure I know, but were you irresponsible?”

We headed for the elevators again.

“Of course not. I like nice things like anyone, but our bills were never remotely in jeopardy of not being paid. It was merely another layer of her hypocrisy. When she was working, I never told her how she should spend her income.”

“When did she quit?”

“When she got pregnant with Candace.” Of course.

“I still can’t see how you married a Stepford Wife.”

He laughed. “Can I blame being young and stupid?”

“Sure.”

He kept smiling, then sighed. “Looking back, it was a time in my life when I was checking off the list of what I thought I should do. Graduate college well, check. Pass the law exam the first time, check. Get hired into a good firm where I could learn and grow, check. Find a nice girl and settle down so Mom and Dad get to spoil grandchildren.”

“Your dad would love your kids.”

“I know.
