Chapter Fourteen

‘It means that Dr Hopkins definitely had a lover,’ Olive said. ‘It wasn’t just Mrs Barnes gossiping. Of course, that doesn’t mean that it was Mrs Greene, but it was certainly someone. The tarot cards were right, his murder was a crime of passion.’

‘It certainly seems that way,’ Blythe agreed. ‘But I don’t know how you’re going to find out who. I mean, how many women are in this city? Fifty thousand? She could be a neighbour, member of staff, even a student…’

‘I know.’ Olive sighed. ‘Though I really hope it wasn’t a student.’

They sipped their tea thoughtfully. Blythe had taken Millie home after the funeral to have a much-needed nap after the emotions of the day and then returned to The Biscuit Tin for some much-needed tea and cake.

‘This lemon curd cake is utterly delicious.’ Blythe scooped a finger through the filling and licked it with great relish. ‘I could eat the whole thing.’

‘I’m flattered.’ Olive smiled. ‘But I’m afraid you’ll have to share it with me.’ She took a large fork full of cake and curd. ‘I need to go to Pembroke College. I was planning to go after the funeral anyway. No need to wait, after all. Not when the café is closed and we don’t have anything else to do today.’

Blythe laughed. ‘You must be the most impatient person in the world.’

‘Nonsense,’ Olive sniffed. ‘There are plenty of people far more impatient than me. Every three-year-old I’ve ever met, for example. The number of snatch and runs I’ve dealt with in my time, they can’t even wait to be served before they’ve got their sticky little fingers on the biscuits-’

‘Right,’ Blythe giggled. ‘So, you’re the most impatient non-toddler, and curious to boot. I’d bet even the three-year-olds are more obedient than you.’

‘Obedient?’ Olive frowned. ‘What’s that supposed to-’

‘The lovely detective’ - Blythe raised an eyebrow - ‘telling you to stay out of the murder and you instantly popping off to interview the neighbours on the sly…’

‘Oh, yes.’ Olive blushed. ‘That. I’d forgotten I told you what he’d said about that.’

‘Then you’re even more distracted than usual.’ Blythe poured herself more tea. ‘If you’ve forgotten that you always tell me everything.’

At this, Olive couldn’t help but smile. Her friend noticed immediately.

‘What?’ she sat forward, nearly spilling the tea. ‘What is it? What haven’t you told me?’

Olive’s smile widened.

‘What?’ Blythe demanded. ‘Tell me, right now!’

‘Why?’ Olive took another, deliberately slow, bite of cake. ‘When it’s so much fun teasing you…’

‘You tell me right now, Olive Crisp,’ Blythe said. ‘Or I’ll, I’ll…’

‘You’ll what?’

‘I won’t tell you about the new man I just met.’

Olive laughed. ‘B, you meet a new man every Tuesday, and most other days too. I don’t think I’ll miss the odd update; I can hardly keep track as it is.’

‘That’s a wild exaggeration,’ Blythe said sniffily. ‘And anyway, I really think this one might be the one.’

‘Oh, B.,’ Olive said. ‘You always think that the latest one is the one.’

‘That’s not true.’

‘It is.’

‘It is not.’

‘It is - Hugo nearly kissed me.
