I hadn’t even realized that Cassidy had been texting me.

I mean, I’d noticed the text notifications, but I’d brushed them off almost as soon as they’d reached my phone. I didn’t care what Cassidy had to say about our relationship, and assumed most of her messages were going to be blaming me for the demise of it, followed by personal insults hurled at my chosen profession, maybe even my personality, too.

But as I checked my messages, right outside of Hannah’s house as I waited for her to make it to the car, it became painfully clear to me that Cassidy had been ramping up to her visit to Hiddleton. She’d been subtly suggesting that we needed to talk in person, and it looked like when I hadn’t replied to her last five messages, she’d shifted to saying that she wanted to see me to make sure that I was okay, that meeting me one-on-one was the only way to assure her that I was safe and sound.

Yeah, right.

Cassidy was a lot of things, but overly concerned about anyone’s wellbeing wasn’t one of them. Especially not mine, since she knew I was more than capable of taking care of myself, regardless of the situation. But she also knew that the only chance she had at making things right with me was showing up in person, probably hoping that I’d hop into bed with her as soon as she showed up on my lawn.

But Cassidy’s usual tricks weren’t going to work this time. When I’d told Hannah that I was never going back to my ex-girlfriend, I meant it. Being around Hannah had reminded me of what it felt like to be around someone who genuinely understood me, who genuinely wanted to understand me. When I looked back on my time with Cassidy, it was clear that while we had a lot of fun together, everything about us was on the surface. She liked me for the same reason she liked going to parties, because I was just another way to kill time before she latched onto her next avenue for excitement.

And where Cassidy had felt like a one-woman party, Hannah felt like a warm beach on a cloudy day. She was calm and calming. She was something I had a feeling that I’d always want to get back to, something I seemingly couldn’t stay away from.

“Sorry, sorry,” Hannah apologized, as she walked up to the car, with Henry in tow. “We were just getting Henry dressed and ready to go.”

“Hi, Chloe!” Henry greeted me with a wide smile. “What movie are we seeing?”

“Whichever one you want to,” I answered, with a smile of my own. “And whichever one your mom wants to see, too.”

“I want to see Action King!” Henry exclaimed, before he climbed into the backseat of the car. “Do you like Action King, Mom?”

“Action King sounds good to me,” Hannah replied, while she slid into the passenger seat. “Does Action King sound all right to you, Chloe?”

“Oh, I’ve never heard of it before,” I admitted.
