LUCAS

"I've made my choice," I told Brent.

"You don't have to tell me," he said. He unbuttoned his suit, even shown a little of his pale stomach. I argued with him to change to something that didn't require black dress shoes in sand. He had been soaking in the cresting waves on my private beach rather than the gaggle of girls in their skimpy bikinis.

"Tia," I interrupted him.

"I said you didn't have to tell me."

"I heard you. I didn't have to tell you, but I did anyway.”

He sighed and turned back to the sun. "Excuse me, smart ass, I should've said you shouldn't tell me, but I'm glad she's your choice." He kicked back, stretched, then looked at me, either with scrutiny or because the sun was so bright.

"Are you sure?"

Sure? There was no doubt in my mind. I couldn't remember the last time I'd been so sure about anything. Tia was what I wanted. After fucking her with little restraint yesterday, I realized I wanted her again. Right after. I’d never tire of her.

"She's had a tough life. You realize?" He kicked sand off his black shoe and flicked a glare my way.

"I won't mess this up. She's not like any other woman I've met."

"That doesn't scare you?"

"Why are you trying to freak me out?"

"They're only questions." He turned away from me. I read Brent pretty well, unlike others.

"You're protecting her, I get it, because you introduced her to me. So you're afraid I'm going to self destruct and ruin it. I'm not. You don't have to protect her from me. I'll do the protecting from now on."

"Your father won't be happy." Brent wouldn't look at me. He was still concerned with watching over the girls or else he wanted to hear what I had to say without his influence.

My father would definitely not be pleased with my choice. His clear choice was Jayne. His last choice was Tia. If he even knew she was there. Something told me that Brent hadn't told him. Possibly my father's spies had said something. He would not approve of Tia. Tia, who had no money to her name. Tia, who lived in a terrible neighborhood. Tia, who would be my bride. No matter what my father said.

It crossed my mind then he might try to stop me, but my determination remained unfazed.

"He asked me to find a bride. I've fulfilled that obligation."

Brent stood up now. He wiped the sand off his pant legs. He buttoned up his suit jacket as beads of sweat rolled down his bald head.

"You're going to marry her now? Does she know this?"

"No," I started. Brent had a point. Didn't Tia say she didn't want to be chosen as a bride, just that she wanted to get to know me better? How was this ever going to work?

"You don't tell a girl you will marry her. You're supposed to surprise them."

"Uh huh. And how are you going to surprise her?" Brent smirked at me now.

My jaw slackened. The hot sun seemed to bear down on me now.
