XIX was a turbulent era in the history of mankind, when much was done for the first time, when the industry from a primitive hammer and anvil switched to high-precision machines, the first steam locomotives ran along railways, the steamboats set sail, and the first airplanes began to make their first flights. The war between the North and the South in the United States significantly advanced the development of weapons business, followed by the Franco-Prussian and Anglo-Boer wars, in which both high-speed rifles and machine guns were used most actively.
And just about exactly âin the middleâ of this century, on January 23, 1855, in the small town of Ogden, in the state of Utah, a boy was born in the USA, named John Moses, and his father was Jonathan Browning, one of the first Mormons in this state. Being an orthodox Mormon, he had three wives and 22 children. His business was profitable - the manufacture of dulnozaryadnyh guns. It went well with him, so in 1852 he opened his own gunmagazine. So it is not surprising that little John, from early childhood, was surrounded by various kinds of âironâ, watched his fatherâs work, helped him in some ways, and then followed in his footsteps and in 13 years collected his first gun from he had the parts he had at hand, and some he did himself.
How much he studied and where - such information on the Internet does not occur. Probably, there are books in which his biography is considered in more detail, but ... you never know where that is. However, another thing is important for us, namely, that already at 23, John Moses Browning received his first patent for the single-shot rifle âJ. M. Browning Single Shot Rifle â, later called theâ Winchester Model of 1879 â. His fatherâs business, that is, the forge and the gun workshop, John and his brothers received after the death of their father. They opened a small gun factory âJ. M. Browning & Bros. "and with her shop and engaged in the repair and conversion of weapons of large firms, and also began to develop their own weapons under their own brand.
However, they are faced with a problem typical of all small enterprises using old equipment. All machines they got from his father, so make them something high-quality was very difficult. The price of the brothers' products could not be high, no matter how high-quality weapons they would produce, because right there at the services of buyers were few of them who were inferior to samples of such firms as Remington, Savage, Winchester. It is clear that small producers to compete with such giants of the arms industry were very difficult. Nevertheless, from 1879 to 1883, John Browning, who was in charge of the company, received patents on a rifle with a sliding butterfly valve and a tubular magazine, a trigger gun with a tubular magazine and reloading with a lever and a number of other samples. And here it happened
