HISTORYOF THE

CHUNG DO KWAN

Between 1910 and 1945, Japan occupied Korea for 35 years. During that era all martial arts was strictly forbidden and in the vast majority of cases, the penalty for training was death. The US military occupied Japan between 1945 and 1950 and banned all martial arts practice. In 1945, the ban in Korea was removed and many styles and Kwans surfaced immediately.

Along with new styles, Tae Kyon, After Korea's liberation from military occupation one year later in 1945, the native arts of Tae Kyon (foot game), Kwon Bup Bu (fist way techniques) and Soo Bahk (hand techniques) surfaced. Many other styles surfaced between 1945 and 1955 including Bang Soo do, Kong Soo Do ("way of the empty hand"), Kuk Sool (martial arts), Kwon Bup (fist techniques), Tae Soo Do ("way of the foot and hand") and Tang Soo Do ("way of the Tang Hand"). The exact time each came into use remains obscure.

Major General Choi, Hong Hi studied calligraphy under Han II Dong. Major General Choi, Hong Hi was teaching students techniques from Tae Kyon In 1937 at age 19. Major General Choi was sent to study calligraphy in Japan.

At the outbreak of World War II, Choi joined the Japanese military, where he was trained in the Japanese Martial Art of Karate Do, within this period he was imprisoned in North Korea. The Chung Do Kwan was created by Grandmaster Won Kuk Lee a year before the end of colonial occupation of Korea in 1944.

Kwans formed to identify the individual school of the style. Some Kwans taught more that self-defense system including hand held weapons such as Kumdo. The Ji Di Kwan school of knowledge), which opened in 1953 taught Kumdo, Yudo along with Kong Soo Do (way of empty hand). The very first Kwan known to have opened is believed to be the Chung Do Kwan, which means “school of the blue wave.”

The Chung Do Kwan was founded by Grandmaster Won Kuk Lee in 1944 in the city of Yong Chun. Grandmaster Won Kuk Lee taught what he referred to as Tang Soo Do or “way of the Tang Hand” at the Chung Do Kwan until 1955 when he agreed to unite with eight other Kwans to teach a style with the name Tae Soo Do. Tae Soo do or “way of the foot and hand” was changed to Tae Kwon Do “way of the fist and foot” in 1957.

The Korean government let it be known that they would support a unified martial arts style with the goal of eventual acceptance into the Olympics. Japanese judo organizations were doing a similar unification for the same reason. Japanese judo became an Olympic sport in 1964. In 1961, the Korean Taekwondo Association (KTA) was created to consolidate the many Kwans and styles and to win government sponsorship as Korea’s united martial art.

The five early Kwans were: Chung Do Kwan teaching Tang Soo Do, Moo Duk Kwan teaching Tang Soo Do, Yun Moo Kwan, Chang Moo Kwan and the Chi Do Kwan.
