Okay, you've written the résumé, gone through an interview, and now your potential employer is looking for references. Who should you turn to? The first place to look is your last place of employment. Who remembers you well? Who can speak highly about you? Don't limit yourself to just previous bosses. References can also be past peers or coworkers from other departments. They can be past customers, clients, mentors, vendors, or professional acquaintances who can vouch for your good character. Make sure not to use someone who barely knows you. The most important thing is that your references are willing to speak highly of you.
Sometimes it's helpful to draft talking points and even recommendation letters for references. Pass these items along for your references’ final polish, personal touch, and use. These are gentle reminders about your work history, volunteer history, and your achievements as they relate to the desired job. Ask references to stick to professional comments and omit irrelevant information about your private life that could harm your chances at landing the job. Don't forget to thank your references after they have spoken on your behalf. This is easily done by sending a card or offering to take them out for coffee or a meal.
If you need to use the same person several times, let them know what happened with your last request. They'll appreciate knowing how the opportunity worked out. It may help them when speaking for you in the future.
