Lost on Hamilton Island, and It's Only Day One!
Five minutes later we'd climbed the Great Northern Highway, descended One Tree Hill and arrived in Coral Sea Avenue outside the Blue Pearl. I had to perform my perfectly ‘natural’ arrival at the house several times so the cameras could capture it from every possible angle.
Bre had only seen the house on the Tourism Queensland website. During my last visit, when all 16 finalists were given the tour, it had seemed like an unachievable dream — a huge house you might visit but you would never live there. Now we were moving in.
‘Oh my god, it's incredible!’ Bre screamed, running from room to room, opening each door in turn to see what lay within. The camera crews loved her pure unbridled wonderment at the size and grandeur of the Blue Pearl. For the past five years she'd been living in backpackers’ hostels and the cheapest hotels on her parents’ worldwide adventure. Now it was her time for the penthouse.
The view from the main balcony was majestic: a wide panoramic outlook across the ridiculously blue waters of Fitzalan Passage to the shore of Whitsunday Island, no more than a few hundred metres away, which was covered in lush tropical hoop pines that dropped down to the water's edge.
Below our balcony the ground fell away sharply. A steep track wound through the foliage, emerging again where the rocks stopped and the ocean started. I caught a glimpse of a turtle in the water below as it popped its head up momentarily to take a breath. For a moment I forgot about the furore behind me and stared off into space, soaking up the atmosphere of this new world. In the distance a yacht under full sail heeled over, the wind powering it through the ocean swell. The buzz of a light aircraft drifted overhead, no doubt ferrying holiday-makers to Whitehaven Beach, tucked away somewhere on the island that lay before me.
‘Ben! Have you seen the size of the spa downstairs?’ Bre belted out, the cameras in hot pursuit.
‘I know; isn't it awesome? There'll be time to jump in there later, I'm sure.’
Alison cut the conversation short. ‘Ben, I need you to come with me; we've got a few interviews we need you to do.’
‘What about me? Can I do any?’ Bre interjected.
‘I'm afraid not, Bre. These are for the news teams about Ben's first day doing the Best Job. If you just wait here we'll be back soon enough. They just want a few photos in the spa, on the bed, in the buggy. You know — the usual PR stuff.’
Bre loves the spotlight and enjoys attention. Taking a back seat didn't come naturally to her. I could see her take the comment hard.
