Phone Screens

The phone screen has one purpose. Make sure that your candidate is as qualified as they sound on their resume and that they are someone you want to bring in for an in-person interview. During a phone screen you want to have a short list of questions that you ask to all candidates, and you want to keep it to less than 30 minutes.

After you’re done with all of the phone screens, you will probably have three distinct groups of candidates: the ones who clearly stand out from the rest, the ones who are clearly unqualified for the position, and the ones who could be good fits but are unexciting. I advocate only calling people that you are excited about and stopping the process with anyone in the third group. The likelihood that you find the right employee in this group is extremely low compared to the first group, and keeping these people on the list is just wasting your and their time.

Call the people in your first group, and schedule some time for them to come into the office.
