Chapter 20
Let Your Lion Loose
âFor those who suffer with anxiety, itâs natural to avoid confrontation, but there are moments when we have to let our lion loose. When a situation demands it, it can often be the right move to let that roar out.â

Iâve never been so glad to see my bed in my life. Bay is already snuggled up on the sofa under a blanket. Iâm so tempted to flop down next to him, but Iâm still wearing a semi-dry jumper over very wet clothes, so I drag my feet over to my bed and start to get changed into something warm. I feel strangely shy around him after what Iâve just told the Warriors.
âBay . . . can I borrow a thick jumper?â I ask, cringing as my voice comes out all breathy.
âSure.â He goes to his pack and then throws a chunky, woolly sweater to me. âI left you something next to your notebook too,â he says, pointing at my little makeshift bedside table.
I look over and thereâs a travel mug. I pop the lid off and take a sniff. Hot chocolate. Itâs official. Iâm smitten. Just a moment ago, I felt incredibly lost and lonely and, without even trying, Bayâs managed to hit upon the one thing thatâs guaranteed to cheer me up.
âYouâre a saint,â I sigh, sitting on my bed and cradling the warm drink.
âHope itâs still hot? You were a bit longer than I thought youâd be.â
âMmm,â I mumble.
âWhatâs up?â
âMmm?â
âDifficult evening? Was it the water? You did really well.â
âI got in,â I say. I feel a bit like a six-year-old showing off my swimming badge for the first time.
âGood for you!â
âThanks. And it wasnât that.â
âOh?â
âIt was . . . people.â
âBit of group dynamics come out to bite you?â
âErm, something like that.â
âWell, if you need to talk . . . Iâm always here, you know.â
I smile at him. âThanks, Bay. Iâm okay. I think I just need my bed.â Thereâs no way I can tell him about Than. I mean, thatâs a sure route to âI told you soâ if ever there was one, and right now I could really do without that.
âNot surprised. Thatâll be the fresh air, gardening and running around like a lunatic in the rain,â he laughs.
I feel a weight land on my feet and look down to see Dennis slinking up next to me for a hug. I snuggle back into the pillows, hot drink in one hand and my other arm wrapped around Dennisâs warm body. He leans his whole weight against me, head lolling on my shoulder. Itâs possibly the best cuddle I could have asked for right now.
âWell, looks like whateverâs bothering you, Dennis knows you need some love,â says Bay. âYouâd better be careful or youâll end up sharing that bed again!â

I wake up the following morning next to a large, snoring mound of dog, and canât help but smile. Bayâs words to me last night before I drifted off to sleep seem to have come true.
