The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis starred Dwayne Hickman as “Dobie Gillis,” a high school student in “Central City.” The cast included Tuesday Weld as Dobie’s dream girl, “Thalia Menninger”; Sheila Gilroy as his bookish classmate, “Zelda Gilroy”; Florida Friebus as Dobie’s mother, “Winnie Gillis”; and Frank Faylen as his father, “Herbert T. Gillis.” In addition, a young Warren Beatty had a brief recurring role as spoiled rich kid “Milton Armitage.” However, it was Dobie’s beatnik buddy Maynard G. Krebs (the “G” stood for “Walter”!) who often stole the show with his goatee, unkempt bohemian attire, beatnik slang, bongo playing, and tendency to freak out whenever he heard the word “work.” Since Denver was a fan of jazz in real life, Krebs idolized jazz legends such as Thelonious Monk and Dizzy Gillespie. A rumor even started up during the series that Denver had actually recorded an album as Krebs called Like What? (which turned out to be a total myth). Krebs was also a fan of a cheesy horror film called The Monster That Devoured Cleveland, which enjoyed a perpetual run at the local movie theater.
