The Question Answered

As I’ve already said, grizzly bear country invites you to participate in a rich and thriving folklore, a near mythology of nature that humans have constructed around the bear. Every sign of a bear, no matter how peripheral or central to the bear’s life, provides you a link into that world, whether it scares the devil out of you, stirs your soul, or just gives you a laugh.

One day at the Goat Haunt trailhead in Glacier National Park I overheard some hikers excitedly reporting to a ranger about a pile of bear scat they’d found a few miles back up the trail. The ranger calmly answered their questions, and agreed with their wide-eyed assertions that, yes, sometimes the piles are “REALLY BIG!” But he finally had to explain that there’s only so much you can tell about a bear from just seeing a pile of its poop.

They were a little let down by the failure of their description of this particular poop pile to provide a complete biography of the bear that produced it, but after a moment’s thought, one of them said, “It does, however, answer the age-old question.”
