Chapter 9

She’d said yes to having dessert with me. I couldn’t believe it. Though I wasn’t sure how or why I decided to go out on a limb and ask her again, I was glad I’d done it.

I wanted to run around shouting it from the rooftops, but I knew I’d have to be smart about this. No being pushy. No trying to impress her with my money. Keep it simple. Keep it casual.

As excited as I was about my date with Gillian, I still didn’t know what to do about the work project—in other words, the reason I was here. I took this time to get away, relax a little, and hopefully come up with a better plan than I had so far. I needed to get on that. I’d built my company by hustling and never giving up. My work ethic until this project had been unstoppable and my company wouldn’t even exist without it. I needed some self-reflection on why I’d been so dead set to take this project on when the team would have tackled it faster without all this stress. Was there some inner crisis that made me feel like I had to prove myself again? Was it simply arrogance and maybe some nostalgia? None of the reasons mattered right now. I had to get moving on this.

I sat down at the desk with a blank notepad in front of me in an attempt to map out the features, but my mind was as blank as the paper in front of me. Finally, I opened my laptop and looked at the project plan that was already in place and focused on the area that had me stumped. How was I going to set up the visual progress chart system? What would it look like? How would it be different and more functional?

I was still hopelessly blocked. I realized I’d probably need more time unplugged before I was encouraged at the idea of taking a little more downtime. I knew I could pull this off as soon as I got in the right frame of mind.

Eventually, I gave up and I headed downstairs for dinner. Regardless of whether or not I’d done any actual work, I still needed to eat dinner before I had my date with Gillian.

Around six o’clock I made my way to the dining room, where I spotted Marlon sitting alone. We’d already shared one meal together today, but I crossed the room to join him anyway. He glanced up from what he was reading—his black notebook—then shot me a quick smile. “You get some writing done after lunch?” I asked as I sat down across from him.

He laughed. “Some lunch. Went a little long for what is usually considered lunch. Seems to have done the trick though, I went up to my room and wrote about five pages. It was a good day.”

I was jealous of his productivity and wanted to change the subject. I picked up the menu, but didn’t look at it.
