As you can see from the picture above, which was taken after the battle, the rebels could easily have blown the parts of this bridge to pieces as the Union brought them down to the river, but they didn’t. They knew exactly how strong their positions were, and they were sure that no matter how many “bluejackets” (as the Union soldiers were sometimes called) Burnside threw over the bridge, they wouldn't make a dent in the Southern positions, so Lee, Jackson, and the other Southern commanders decided to let the Union “come on across.” In actuality, they would pile atop each other in wave upon wave, crowding the area before the slopes where the Southerners were waiting. Eighty-two years later, men from both the North and the South, fighting together this time, would pile onto the beaches of Iwo Jima in much the same way, and they were slaughtered in staggering numbers when the Japanese opened up on the overcrowded beaches.
