THE LONG LINE OF PIRATES were all shapes and sizes. Most featured some trace of former injury, from missing limbs and eye patches to broken teeth and jagged scars. The only thing they seemed to have in common was the gleam of excitement and adventure in their eyes.

Glenna greeted each one seriously, stopping to shake hands. Though they all introduced themselves, Glenna could barely remember their names. There were just so many! As each made her acquaintance, Captain Thatch dismissed them, sending them back to their duties on the ship. Atterberry, now over his initial excitement, brooded sullenly in the corner where he sat perched upon several barrels and a coil of thick rope.

Flutter watched the proceedings from the tangle of hair she had recreated at Glenna's neck. For once, she remained still and quiet, realizing the gravity of the situation.

Finally, only one pirate remained. She smiled at Glenna, and Glenna gasped. “But you're... you're a girl!”

“Girls can be pirates, too.” The pirate grinned. Her long curly red hair, layered skirts, and white billowy shirt rippled in the strong wind of the storm. She stood with her hands on her hips, near the bottom of her red corset. She looked thin and delicate, with a Grecian nose and large gray-green eyes set in an oval face.

She offered her hand to Glenna. “I'm Grace, Pirate of the Seas.”

Glenna took her hand. She was surprised to find that though the pirate appeared to be frail, she was actually quite strong. The skin on her hand was rough and hardened by work.

“It's nice to meet you, Grace,” Glenna said.

Grace shifted her gaze from Glenna to Thatch. “I suppose we should show her the ship?”

“Aye,” Thatch said. “Glenna, Grace is my second-in-command, and one of the best pirates on our ship, the Key and Latch. I'd trust her with my life.”

“As I would trust him with mine.” Grace smiled at Glenna. Flanked by the two pirates, Glenna toured the pitching ship. It was large, much larger than she expected. Hammocks and built-in cots battled for space with supplies and cargo underneath. Above, the wide expanse of the deck was decorated with ornate wood, the captain’s quarters overlooking it all.

“Shall we?” Thatch stepped aside, gesturing towards the wide doors.

Glenna followed him inside the captain’s quarters, expecting them to be as rough and jumbled as the rest of the ship.

What she found surprised her.
